How DMs can improve Paladin narratives in D&D

The Paladin class bugs me. I already don't like how it mechanically feels, but I REALLY don't like its narrative. How do Paladins differ from Fighters and Clerics? Why do they use Charisma instead of Wisdom? What is an oath, exactly?
